Sustainable Growth Projects

Sustainability has become an umbrella term for a wide range of initiatives and policy. RROC chooses to be the catalyst for specific flagship projects that will raise the Regina region profile, prove leading technology and attract people and investment for further growth.

RROC has teamed with a major developer to design a large scale green subdivision housing development which will integrate 21st Century approaches to energy and water management with higher housing density and advanced amenities.

RROC has also followed the development of a range of promising approaches to airborne wind power. CEOs ofairborne wind energy startups in Europe and the USA support RROC’s plans for establishing a North American airborne wind energy technology test site. We will assess business feasibility this year.

Federal standards for wastewater effluent release are tightening. Land-based treatment offers a lower risk, lower cost approach and Saskatchewan has several operating examples using alfalfa irrigation. However, effluent irrigated trees may offer a potentially superior choice with additional opportunity for biomass energy production. RROC has facilitated establishing a consortium keen to develop effluent irrigated willow farms. We are now working with City engineers to explore conceptual designs for land-based treatment options.

RROC will begin two projects that develop long term tourism. We are exploring expansion of the Western Canada Farm Progress Show beyond dry land agricultural technology to include soil carbon technology, biomass and renewable energy, and energy conservation.

Second, RROC along with the City of Regina is helping to organize a National Infrastructure Summit to take placein Regina in January 2011. The focus of this Summit is to initiate exploration of new approaches to local government infrastructure finance, operation and replacement. Read more.
