  • Regina economy posts over 5% GDP growth in 2011

    Regina’s economy grew by more than five per cent in 2011, second only to St. John’s, N.L., but will ease to 2.9 per cent in 2012 — fourth among 27 major Canadian cities — the Conference Board of Canada said in its metropolitan outlook report Wednesday. “Surging employment is attracting newcomers to the area, fuelling strong population increases. The medium term looks good too, with GDP forecast to rise at least three per cent per year between 2013 and 2015,” the report said.

  • Donnelly’s personal mission to help local artists

    Marian Donnelly couldn’t live without art, so she’s on a mission to help artists make a living and to improve Regina in the process.

    Donnelly strongly believes art is integral to a healthy city. “Quality of life equals economic development,” said Donnelly, and what quality of life is there without visual art, music, theatre and dance?

    “We sing our children to sleep; why do we do that? It’s music, it’s the sound of the angels. Life without any kind of art form would just suck.”

    So after years of managing musicians, heading up SaskMusic and the Globe Theatre, and running her own arts consultancy company, Donnelly’s lifelong career in arts administration has led to the Creative City Centre. The idea for the artists’ space on Hamilton Street in downtown Regina was conceived during Donnelly’s tenure as Globe manager.
