Global Transportation Hub Authority receives funding
Through the Canada-Saskatchewan Western Economic Partnership Agreement, the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are contributing a combined $1.2 million in funding to the Global Transportation Hub Authority (GTHA) in Regina.
This funding, announced March 18 by Andrew Scheer, Member of Parliament for Regina-Qu’Appelle, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and the Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Saskatchewan’s Minister of Enterprise and Minister Responsible for Trade, will be used for both marketing and green technology initiatives.
The Global Transportation Hub Authority (GTHA) will use a portion of the funding to investigate the utilization of green technologies on the over 1,600 acre site. Funding will also be used to develop and implement marketing strategies to identify and attract new businesses and distribution centres to the GTH, like the Canadian Logistics Services facility that opened Feb. 1, 2011 to serve the Loblaw group of companies.
The increased investment will bring jobs to the Regina region and provide better access to shipping container traffic and international markets for Saskatchewan exporters as the GTH will be seen as a viable transportation hub along major North American shipping routes and a link into the Asia-Pacific region.
With the federal and provincial assistance, it is anticipated that the GTH will attract up to $300 million in new investments to Saskatchewan.
Both Canada and Saskatchewan are contributing $25 million each over four years to the Canada-Saskatchewan Western Economic Partnership Agreement to strengthen economic activity and improve quality of life in western Canadian communities.
