Regina awarded 2012 Skate Canada
Challenge
Skate Canada
announced today that Regina has been chosen as the host city for the 2012 Skate
Canada Challenge Competitions. The event is scheduled to take place from
November 30 – December 4, 2011 at Evraz Place.
Through partnerships with Evraz Place,
the Regina Hotel Association and assistance from the Destination Marketing
Fund, along with strong support from Skate Saskatchewan and Skate Regina, RROC
lead the bid process to encourage Skate Canada to choose Regina as the host.
The first-rate facilities of the Co-Operators Centre, our strong volunteer
support through the Sectional office, our hotels, and the proximity of hotels
to the main venue were all influential factors in making this decision.
The Skate
Canada Challenges are elimination rounds for either the Skate Canada Junior
Nationals (novice and junior level competitors) or the Canadian Championships
(senior level competitors). To promote the development of consistent standards
of performance across the country, the Skate Canada Challenge combines the
Western and Eastern skaters into one category at each level to execute a true
qualifying round for the national championships. These events are planned,
managed and executed by Skate Canada with the assistance of a local volunteer
organizing team. The purpose of this level of competition is to provide a
developmental and cost-effective means for a sufficiently large number of
skaters from Sections to compete against each other for the privilege of
advancing to the national championships.
Over 500
skaters will participate in the event. This is the only opportunity for novice,
junior and senior skaters to qualify for the 2012 Canadian Figure Skating
Championships and 2012 Skate Canada Junior Nationals. The Challenge event will
also see the crowning of the 2012 Canadian Pre-Novice Champions in men’s,
women’s, pair and ice dance.
